Chelmsford College

Severe Weather

Information for Students and Parents

In the event of severe weather conditions the college will follow the guidance from the Local Authority. This is that schools and colleges should plan to remain open in all but the most exceptional circumstances.

The Department for Education and the police have confirmed that getting to work and school are within the overall definition of essential - in other words the statement that 'people should not go out unless their journey is essential' is not a reason why school staff and pupils should not consider making the journey to work/school.

However, staff and students are not expected to put themselves at risk by travelling in severe weather conditions. Therefore in order that the college remains open it may be appropriate to open later and close earlier to enable staff and students to travel more safely and deal with any travel congestion. To ensure students are managed effectively and safely with the staff available it may be necessary to change normal college routines e.g. classes may need to be grouped together.

Decisions to open for limited hours or to close will be made as early as possible and will be communicated to parents via the media listed below.
