Met them, Pitched It, Got the T-Shirt

Manufacturing aftermarket bike components, letterbox gifts, beauty services and canvases personalised with Swarovski crystals were amongst several of the products and ideas being pitched at the 2021 "Pitch It!" event at Chelmsford College last month.

Fifteen students pitched to a panel of judges who included Amber McCauley from the TMF Group, Chris Perrins from Fully Caffeinated Design and Julia Holden from The Cosmic Crafter.

Pitch It! forms part of the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Enterprise and Entrepreneurship at Chelmsford College. The course is equivalent to 3 A' Levels and the mission is to train and motivate young people, unleash entrepreneurial talent and create opportunities for young people to realise their potential.

Whilst the course structure is business-led and involves partnerships with a range of companies, it also focuses on students planning and setting up their own businesses, providing leadership and hands-on business experience.

Students taking part in Pitch It! are aged between 16 to 21 and are in the first year of a two-year course. Due to the pandemic, students have been learning completely online since January 2021 up until Easter. They work independently to develop their business ideas for three months, alongside their studies and other commitments.

Students pitch to a panel and gain valuable feedback to allow them to develop and grow their business idea. They build confidence, elevate self-esteem and develop their communication skills and business acumen.

At this year's Pitch It! event, Luca, who set up an "old school" rap themed clothing business was awarded the best pitch and business idea.

Pitch It

Claire Wood, Lecturer in Business Studies at Chelmsford College said "I'm so proud of all of our students and what they have managed to achieve, especially with the challenges of a pandemic. Our students have demonstrated their resilience and innovative skills to all set up their businesses. We're looking forward to seeing how these businesses develop in their second year."
