The National Extended Diploma is a 2 year, full time course ideal for anyone who wants to progress to higher education courses in business areas before entering employment. It can also support learners who want to progress directly to employment. The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Enterprise and Entrepreneurship is equivalent to 3 A Levels. 

The aims of the course are to learn how to:

  • Set up a supply chain
  • Learn how to communicate with customers
  • Opportunity to work closely with a business
  • Gain experience dealing with real business issues
  • Give learners the opportunity to plan, set up and run their own business through a structured programme of learning

The course requires students to set up and run their own business. Assessment will be through both practical and written tasks. An office area will be provided for students and business dress is to be worn.

Study Overview

Mandatory Units:

There are 8 mandatory units, 4 internal and 4 external. Learners must complete and achieve at Pass grade or above for all these units in group A and at least two from group B.

Group A:

  • Unit 2 Developing a Marketing Campaign
  • Unit 3 Business and Personal Finance
  • Unit 6 Business Decision Making
  • Unit 12 Principles of Management
  • Unit 13 Developing an Enterprise Strategy

Group B:

  • Unit 1 Enterprise and Entrepreneurs
  • Unit 4 Launch and Run an Enterprise
  • Unit 5 Survival and Growth

Optional Units:

  • Unit 8 Entrepreneurship and Intrapreneurship in Practice
  • Unit 9 Innovation and Enterprises
  • Unit 10 Recruitment and Selection Processes
  • Unit 11 Marketing Communications

Employment & Labour Market Opportunities

Maths and English - Take it Seriously!

At Chelmsford College we are dedicated to helping all our learners achieve their ambitions and we acknowledge that in order to do well, some of our learners may need extra support in maths and/or English.

We provide specialist teaching as a compulsory part of the study programme for all learners who have not achieved a grade C at GCSE in these subjects and we all take maths and English seriously.

Entry Requirements:

4 GCSEs grade C (or equivalent grade) or above or a pass grade at a relevant Level 2 vocational course.

Specific Entry Requirements:

GCSE English or Maths at Grade C (or equivalent grade) or above. It is preferable that Business Studies has been studied at GCSE level.

Method of Assessment

There are a range of assessment methods across the course - internal and external.

Internal assessments are assessed using a variety of styles including:

  • Writing up findings of research
  • Using case studies to explore different situations
  • Carrying out projects
  • Demonstrating practical skills

External assessments are either:

  • Examinations - All learners take the same assessment at the same time, normally with a written outcome.
  • Set tasks  - Learners take the assessment during a defined window and demonstrate understanding through completion of a vocational task.

The external units must be achieved at a Pass or above and learners are only permitted to re-sit the assessment once during their study programme.
